How To Glue A Laminate Flooring Plank?

Laminate flooring is a glueless system; usually, it does not require any glue.

But, there are some instances where adding glue is needed and helpful, such as in a mud room or a bathroom with a water source area, 5 feet within this water source.

In these conditions, the environmental parameters go beyond what the glueless system is designed for.

This system doesn’t carry the ability to withstand long-term, such as going into the mudroom with snowy boots or having water spill from the sink in a bathroom.

You could also consider gluing a laminate flooring plank in the kitchen, but be sure to weigh the cost of benefit analysis of the top of a moisture resistance against the impact resistance and the ability to replace an individual plank.

You usually lose this ability when you glue planks together.

Keep reading to discover the key to gluing a laminate flooring plank and a step-by-step guide, so you know exactly what you need to do to get your project done.

What To Know Before You Glue A Laminate Flooring Plank

If you need to glue a laminate flooring plank, the glue you use will make all the difference. Not just any wood glue will be good enough as some contain higher moisture levels.

You need a PVA Type 2 glue to glue a laminate flooring plank.

Besides selecting a PVA Type 2 glue, also look for a tube with a cap designed to allow you to regulate how much glue comes out easily.

You won’t need more glue to glue a laminate flooring plank.

Before we show you the exact steps to glue a laminate flooring plank, here is what you need to know. This is very important.

The plank has a tongue and a groove side.

We often see that the worker’s intuition often leads to adding the glue to the groove side of the plank. But, for better performance, add the glue on top of the tongue for two important reasons:

  • It will limit the amount of glue you will use (this will prevent excess glue from going to waste and spilling all over your plank)
  • This will hold it up closer to the surface (in the scenarios mentioned above you need to prevent more than just topical water from entering the sides of the plank)

How To Glue A Laminate Flooring Plank

Follow these steps to glue a laminate flooring plank the right way:

  1. Get your PVA Type 2 ready, and your plank
  2. Add little glue to the top of the tongue
  3. Use a very low angle of engagement
  4. Lock the planks together
  5. Some glue will lose up; use a clean rag to wipe it off before the glue dries to prevent having a glue haze on the surface of the plank.

Make sure you wipe the plank down well, applying more pressure if needed. Go back and ensure that any excess glue is wiped off the slope.

Allow the glue to dry and fully cure for 24 hours.

Conclusion

A laminate flooring system is designed not to require glue. But there are some conditions which can benefit from adding glue to it, areas such as:

  • A mudroom
  • Areas with water sources

You shouldn’t use any wood glue. Ones with higher levels of moisture should be avoided.

To glue a laminate flooring plank, use a type 2 PVA glue with a cap that gives you control over how much glue you use.

For better performance, add the glue on top of the tongue side of the plank and not on the groove side.

Immediately wipe down any glue that spills over the surface of the plank, don’t wait for it to dry. And allow the glue to cure for 24 hours fully.
