How To Glue Sand To Paper?

Gluing sand to paper is a very easy project to do. You must add glue to the paper and generously sprinkle it with sand.

But, if you want the results to look great and be lasting, it does matter the type of paper and glue you will use.

If the paper is too thin and you apply heavy amounts of glue to it, it could get too wet and rip even before you add the sand onto it (or after).

A thicker paper works best for gluing sand to paper.

The type of glue you use for this project also matters.

Keep reading to discover which adhesives are best for gluing sand to paper and how you can easily do it without the mess.

Which Glue Is Best For Gluing Sand To Paper?

Gluing sand to paper is easy, not because of the very few steps you need to take and the simple application but also because there are so many glues that are great for this.

The main point here is to use glue that dries clear.

This way, if there are tiny spots on which there is less sand, you won’t be able to see the glue. You will see the paper instead. And this seamless look will make the project’s overall look the best it can be.

Here are some of the best glues for gluing sand to paper and their features.

Bottled Craft or PVA Glue

PVA or bottled craft glue may take longer to dry, but it is easy to work with.

You can layer the paper first, then sprinkle the sand on top of it. Or, if you are looking for a rough finish, you can add glue into a disposable cup, add sand, mix it well, then apply it to the paper and let it dry.

A commonly used craft glue is Elmer’s Clear Glue.

Elmer’s Clear Glue has the following features:

  • Clear glue formula that dries smooth
  • Adjustable before it dries
  • No-run gel formula
  • Washable
  • Non-toxic

School Glue Stick

Everyone knows glue sticks!

These are the go-to glues for children at school but also at home.

They are easy to apply and don’t create a mess as they come in a solid format, not a liquid or gel format.

In comparison to gel glue, glue stick dries faster. Plus, it doesn’t get the paper wet which could lead to unwanted rips.

But because of the size of these glue sticks, you may not be able to apply them to very small areas on your paper.

You can find multiple brands and types of glue sticks. Pick ones that dry clear.

Here are some examples.

Elmer’s Disappearing Purple Glue Sticks:

  • It goes on purple, which is helpful to see where you have the glue applied
  • It dries clear
  • Easy and smooth application
  • Non-toxic
  • Washable
  • Acid-free
  • Photo safe

Gorilla Kids Disappearing Purple Glue Sticks:

  • Goes on purple but dries clear
  • Grabs to surfaces quickly
  • Non-Toxic
  • Washable
  • Gorilla strong

How To Glue Sand To Paper: Exact Steps The Easy Way

You need to pick the right paper depending on the glue you will use for this project, keeping in mind that using gel glue can soak the paper. If the paper is too thin, it can easily rip before, during, or after applying the glue t it.

This will waste paper, glue, and your time.

If you want to use a glue stick for gluing sand to paper, then regular printer paper will do.

If you prefer using gel glue, then use thicker paper.

Once you have your glue and paper ready, you are ready for the fun part.

Follow these steps to glue sand to paper:

  1. Apply the glue to the paper – cover the surface entirely if you want to cover it with sand, or add the glue only to the parts you want to glue sand to
  2. A light to medium layer of glue is more than enough – don’t over-saturate the paper with glue (especially with gel glue)
  3. Pour the sand onto the glue from a container
  4. Make sure you have enough sanded across the glue
  5. Let it sit until the glue fully dries – the drying time depends on the type of glue, so make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions
  6. When the glue has dried properly, carefully tilt your paper to allow excess sand to fall off the paper

For easy application, best results, and a better drying time, apply a thin layer of glue to a thick paper.

Once you remove the excess sand and you notice empty spots, you can re-apply glue to these spots and sprinkle them with sand. Wait for the glue to dry before you remove the excess sand fully.

Conclusion

Gluing sand to paper could not be easier.

You can use either a gel glue or a glue stick, each has its advantages. It is best to use thick craft paper for this project.

If you only have printer paper, use a glue stick, not gel glue. Gel glue can easily soak the paper, causing it to rip easily as you work with it.
